Paper & Pencil Interview (PAPI)

Paper and pencil interview (PAPI) is a commonly used method of data collection. It represents a process of interviewing, where the interviewer has a printed-out questionnaire from where he/she reads the questions, asks the respondents and fill their answers into the questionnaire.

PAPI requires well-trained interviewers who are able to properly lead the communication process and to control the interview environment. It is a good-approach to gather in-depth information about attitudes, beliefs, and other, more sophisticated topics of research. It is a suitable method for asking closed, e.g. multiple-choice, as well as open-ended questions. Personal contact with participants might elicit richer and more detailed responses. It also provide an excellent opportunity to probe and explore questions. However, it should be highlight that PAPI also provides the greatest chance for interview bias.

Respondents do not need to be able to read or write to respond.
